Italian fashion and textile innovators Majotech® has announced the start of a strategic partnership with Parley for the Oceans. The collaborative mission, bringing together two material innovators, aims to fight for and protect marine ecosystems currently under threat from marine plastic pollution by upcycling and transforming it into high-performance fabrics.
An estimated 10 million tons of plastic waste contaminates our oceans every year, creating serious threats to the marine ecosystem and the health of coastal communities.
The dynamic partnership will work to educate and empower companies and communities to end pollution by recovering waste materials before they reach the world’s rivers, beaches and coastlines.
Majotech’s commitment will not only be addressed in the creation of an eco-innovative product, but also in the implementation of a system of responsible production and ethical codes for the company’s corporate management. This marks another step forward for the Italian company towards its commitment to the Majotech® for The Planet project.
The collaboration with Parley will result in an entirely upcycled fabric produced with Parley Ocean Plastic® — a range of premium materials made from upcycled marine debris intercepted from remote islands, beaches and coastal communities.
“We are honored to have been chosen by Parley. Both organizations have in common several goals: one of them is to reduce plastic pollution on our planet, as well as to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry,” declares Andrea Terracini, CEO of Majotech®. “We are confident that this journey can direct us towards the changes that today’s new consumers want, increasingly conscientious and less impulsive, sensitive to a sustainable and slow production system, which requires a circular economy and an optimized production.”
Cyrill Gutsch, CEO and Founder, Parley for the Oceans said, “Our new partnership with Majotech® is aimed at creating real solutions in response to the threat of plastic pollution. Together, we will establish new material standards and industry innovations that focus on transparency and quality of material to boost a future of creativity, collaboration and eco- innovation.”
In previous years, Majotech® has led systemic change towards sustainable fashion, production and finishing techniques, while preserving the quality required by the luxury sector and the fabrics’ technical features.
In addition, Majotech® has pledged to implement the Parley AIR Strategy (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign) into the framework of their production, drastically reducing the use of plastic, taking measures to redesign the product and eventually replace it with a more innovative and long term solution.
